Kelly Brook's 'toning' Reebok trainers that were unfit for purpose

Watchdogs have banned adverts for trainers that promised ‘better legs and a better bum with every step’. Reebok’s EasyTone shoes were heavily promoted by Kelly Brook, who was hired as a spokesmodel for the range. But after studying the claims in two promotions for the Advertising Standards Authority concluded they were ‘misleading’

The adverts claimed the curved soles of the trainers made the legs and bottom work harder to keep the body stable while running or walking. On the TV commercial, the voiceover stated: ‘Helps tone legs and bum more than regular trainers. Better legs and a better bum with every step.’

The magazine advertisement promised: ‘Get up to 28 per cent more of a workout for your bum. And up to 11 per cent more for your hamstrings and calves.’ But the ASA said: ‘Because we considered that we had not seen robust, scientific evidence to support the efficacy claims made in the magazine ad or the TV ad, we concluded that the claims had not been substantiated and were misleading.

The Reebok EasyTone range, counts Helena Christensen, Nicole Scherzinger, Sarah Harding, Bar Refaeli and Whitney Port among its celebrity fans. In an appearance to promote the trainers in August, Miss Brook, 31, said that the EasyTone trainers helped her keep her enviably toned figure. She said: 'EasyTones are fantastic. You can wear them whatever you’re doing and know that you are toning and tightening with every step!

'I wear them to walk my dog Rocky, when I’m doing the housework, when I pop to the shops… it’s a great, easy way to stay in shape and they look stylish too so no-one needs to know that you’re wearing toning trainers!'

Christensen, 41, who also modelled for the launch campaign, added: 'I could feel these working right away which is why I've stuck with them,' she said. 'Living in New York, I like to walk everywhere, so to have trainers that tone your legs and butt as you walk is fantastic,' she explained.
